VMWare Workstation 12.0

This document walks you through setting up Cinder in a Ubuntu 15.10 guest running under VMWare Workstation 12.0.




Kernel Setup

Workstation natively supports OpenGL up to version 2.0 but the minimum requirement for Cinder is 3.2. So we'll need to install support for it.

In a newly installed version of Ubuntu, create a vmware-mesa.sh with the following content.

./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr --libdir=${LIBDIR}
make -j 4

mkdir -p $TOP/vmware-mesa-backup
sudo cp /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/vmwgfx/vmwgfx.ko* $TOP/vmware-mesa-backup
sudo rm /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/vmwgfx/vmwgfx.ko*

cd $TOP/vmwgfx
make -j 4
sudo make install
sudo depmod -a

sudo update-initramfs -u

echo vmwgfx | sudo tee -a /etc/modules

# Prints out the installed location of vmwgfx.ko
find /lib/modules -name vmwgfx.ko -exec ls -l '{}' \;

Source - chaoticbob/Cinder

Now run. It should take about 10-20 minutes to finish.

$ chmod +x vmware-mesa.sh
$ ./vmware-mesa.sh

Once it's done, reboot the VMWare Workstation guest.




Building

Let's install Cinder.

You should now be seeing this, which means the installation was a success!
